How to get an IBAN? Payingit can guide you and help you open one

What an adventure! You are going to live and work in another country. Say goodbye to your friends and family in your home country and—THE NETHERLANDS, here I come! You avoided all the hassle of getting here by using the services of Payingit International, so now you can focus on the important things in life: enjoying new things and getting started with your dream job in the Netherlands.

You deserve a fair reward for all the work you have put in to get set up. A job pays you a salary, and we are in charge of transferring that salary to you. That requires you to tick one more thing off your list—getting an IBAN. Once you set that up, we can transfer the money and you can treat yourself to a nice cup of coffee or the new smart phone you have had your eye on!

What is an IBAN?

It sounds like a super highway or a brand of something fashionable and expensive—actually it is your bank account number. IBAN stands for International Bank Account Number, a unique number that identifies your account in the systems of all financial institutions worldwide.

The IBAN is made up of the bank’s code followed by your account number.

TIP:  You can set up an account at any bank of your choice. Be sure and ask about their fees before you decide.

How to get an IBAN?

The easiest way to get a bank account and your IBAN is to walk into a bank with all your personal documents. If you prefer, you can do it online.

What is required to get your IBAN?

  • BSN: The BSN is a unique personal number. All Dutch citizens get a Burger Service Number at birth. Anyone coming to work in the Netherlands needs to apply for one. Everyone has to have one. Read our blog ‘Citizen Service Number / BSN’
  • Identification: A valid passport or identity card.  A driver’s license is not enough.
  • Proof of address in the Netherlands:This can be a rental agreement signed by you and the renting agency/person
  • Residence permit: If you come from outside the EU, you must have a residence card to show the bank.

Once all your documents are approved, the bank will issue you your IBAN. It usually takes just a few minutes. You will also get a plastic bank card (like a debit card, with a chip) with a secure PIN which will be sent to you separately.

Our advice

Before you open an account, ask the bank what it costs to open and maintain an account with them. It is helpful too if they can provide you with everything in English (letters and forms) and if they have Internet banking in English. Ask about any mobile apps if you use those. Online is a very handy way to do your financial administration.

IBAN service

Besides our Payroll Umbrella Services, we also provide an IBAN service. We assist you with getting your residence permit, BSN, and IBAN by combining these three errands in one morning or afternoon.
